What is Andover
ABC?
Andover ABC is the Merrimack Valley's
open door to opportunity for minority students with great academic and leadership
potential from educationally disadvantaged schools. While attending Andover High School, eleven young women from
urban areas come to live in the white frame house on Main Street with the non-paid resident
directors and tutor. They participate fully in the demanding curriculum at the
high school to prepare for success at competitive colleges and, later, for
positions of leadership.
While the girls learn the benefits of living
cooperatively in a dormitory setting, each is also matched with a local host
family form the Merrimack
Valley community. With
their host families, the young women share weekly meals, monthly weekends and
many cultural, recreational and social activities. The Andover ABC program
allows these talented young people a supportive option to an education in their
urban public schools and provides an additional family network.
For almost thirty years, forward-thinking and
generous Merrimack
Valley foundations,
corporations and private citizens have given financial support and encouragement
to the Andover ABC program.
Our Commitment
The Andover ABC is dedicated to providing
academically talented minority students with an educational alternative.
Through its commitment to an outstanding secondary school experience, the
program seeks to prepare students to excel in college and in subsequent
professional and community leadership positions. Andover ABC pursues its
mission by the use of the facilities of its public high school, through
extensive community involvement and by selection students who it believes can
most benefit from the educational, cultural and social opportunities offered by
this unique program.
